What is a DOCX file?

The DOCX format developed by Microsoft as successor to the previous DOC format (and competitor to the popular ODF standard) was standardized as Office Open XML in 2006. In contrast to the previous binary format, the texts and formatting instructions are stored in XML files that are combined to form a DOCX file. As of MS Office 2007, this format is generally supported, third-party manufacturers of office software such as Openoffice support this format as of version 3. Patches are often available for older software so that they can at least read DOCX.

PDF enables the exchange of documents independent of original software, hardware or operating system. PDFs can contain links, buttons, form fields, audio and video elements as well as logical functions. The PDF file contains all the information required for presentation, such as the used fonts and formatting instructions. PDFs can be signed electronically. Normally the Acrobat Reader is used for the visualization.
